Meta Restructures AI Division Amid Internal Tensions
Meta Platforms is overhauling its artificial intelligence division, splitting it into four specialized teams. The restructuring aims to accelerate development and enhance competitiveness, though downsizing the division’s workforce remains under consideration.
The new teams will focus on general AI research, superintelligent systems, AI-powered products, and infrastructure management. Meanwhile, Meta is exploring third-party AI models—both open-source and proprietary—to supplement its in-house efforts.
Internal friction has emerged following CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s creation of a superintelligence team led by Alexandr Wang. A potential shift to closed-source models has further fueled debate, with the team abandoning the older "Behemoth" framework.
